Around three hours earlier, police had been called to Catherine Gardens, Thorpe St Andrew, to reports a woman had suffered serious injuries.

The woman, named by locals as Williams’ estranged wife Tania Williams, was pronounced dead at the scene outside her home.

Witnesses said she had been slashed across the neck.

One person living on Harvard Court said Williams was arrested as he came out of his property.

“He was grabbed in the street,” the neighbour said.

Neighbours said Williams had been living in the council-owned housing complex for around three months, following a relationship breakdown.

One neighbour who knows both Williams and his estranged wife said he had seen them together in recent days.

Other residents in the housing block of eight flats have been moved to another hostel following the arrest.

Williams remains in police custody.
