The sun is shining to start the week, but you’ll want to turn on your headlights later today as the forecast for Metro Vancouver is calling for plenty more fog. And some flurries may be around the corner.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow-level weather alert for fog that began smothering several cities across the region, and continues until Tuesday, Jan. 20.

According to ECCC Meteorologist Derek Lee, a large amount of low clouds has formed over the Strait of Georgia, with a ridge of high pressure acting as a cap and trapping moisture.

“With low winds, there is persistent fog lingering,” added Lee. “It will be worse in areas by the water, like by the harbour in Vancouver or in Richmond.

“Fog tends to lift a bit during the day, with sun burning the low cloud off. But then fog reforms overnight.”

ECCC also warned drivers and commuters to allow extra time to reach their destination.

“Be prepared for areas of near-zero visibility,” it added. “If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.”

More winter weather may also be on the way for the Vancouver forecast as ECCC is calling for a chance of flurries at higher terrain starting on Saturday, Jan. 24.

ECCC is forecasting daytime highs of up to 9˚C on Tuesday, and overnight lows dropping down to -1˚C on Friday evening.

This weekend, daytime temperatures will only reach a high of 4˚C with mainly clouds and a 60 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries. Flurries will be most likely in areas like Grouse Mountain or Burnaby Mountain, added Lee.
