Cygnus gymnastics is looking for a new home after being alerted by Loblaw of the imminent closure of the Dominion in the old Memorial Stadium on Lake Avenue.
In a letter to members, Cygnus says it was informed yesterday of Loblaw’s decision to close the store. Its current lease is expected to conclude in May.
Cygnus says its focus is on ensuring stability for its athletes, families and staff as it assesses next steps.
Dominion Memorial Stadium (Olympic Construction)
Memorial Stadium, which was built in the 1950s with donations collected in memory of lives lost in the Second World War, closed in 2001.
As an ice arena it served as the home of the St. John’s Caps and the St. John’s Maple Leafs, and hosted numerous high-profile concerts including Tina Turner’s iconic Private Dancer tour stop in 1985.
Loblaw’s acquisition of the building was met with controversy in the capital city in the early 2000s. Despite widespread public opposition, the rink was torn down, and the Dominion grocery store was established in the old renovated building in 2007.
