Those long-simmering Beckham tensions are finally boiling over. David Beckham soft launched a response to his son Brooklyn’s weekend Instagram rant about their family. During a CNBC interview on January 20, the day after Brooklyn’s post, the outlet asked Beckham a softball question about how social media affects kids. “It can be dangerous … I’ve tried to do the same with my children, to educate them,” Beckham said. “They make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes. That is how they learn. That’s what I try to teach my kids. You have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well.” Beckham did not mention any of his children, including Brooklyn, by name, but the implication that his son is making a “mistake” was clear enough.

Brooklyn’s tell-all Instagram Story called out his parents’ actions toward him and his now-wife, Nicola Peltz-Beckham. “My parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding,” he wrote. “And it hasn’t stopped.” Neither parent has directly commented on that allegation, and previously, the Beckham patriarch avoided SkyNews’ direct questions in Davos, Switzerland.

As their newest scandal balloons, the Beckhams are being haunted by the ghosts of controversies past on all sides. Rebecca Loos, David’s former assistant, commented on her Instagram that she was “So happy [Brooklyn] is standing up for himself and speaking publicly finally!!!! I have felt so bad for his poor wife, knowing too well what they can be like!” Loos is best known for claiming in 2004, to News of the World, that she had a three-month affair with David, which he called “ludicrous” at the time. The next Beckham documentary will have a lot more skeletons to contend with.
