Seattle Public Schools said six schools went into shelter-in-place protocol after reports of nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity on Tuesday.

SEATTLE — Several schools in Seattle were under shelter-in-place protocol Tuesday due to reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the area, according to Seattle Public Schools.

The district said shelter-in-place is common practice when any law enforcement activity is taking place in the vicinity.

The impacted schools include Aki Kurose Middle School, Beacon Hill International, Cleveland STEM High School, Dearborn Park International, Maple Elementary and Mercer International Middle School.

Aki Kurose lifted its shelter-in-place around noon and Cleveland lifted its protocol in the afternoon. All of the other schools lifted shelter-in-place protocols at dismissal time.

Students continued with their regular classes, but remained inside the buildings. The reports of ICE activity are unconfirmed and security staff have not seen any ICE officers, according to the district.

“Staff remain on alert as a precaution,” the district said in a statement.
