Two others are also missing and one person has been seriously injured after a landslide in nearby Papamoa, according to RNZ.

Local states of emergency have been declared in the Bay of Plenty and various parts of the North Island, including Northland, Coromandel, Tairāwhiti, and Hauraki.

Seven people in Tairāwhiti were rescued after they were trapped overnight on a rooftop.

Elsewhere north of Auckland, a man has been reported missing after getting swept away in the Mahurangi River on Wednesday.

The Bay of Plenty region where Mount Maunganui sits experienced its wettest day on record on Thursday, with two-and-a-half months’ worth of rain in 12 hours, according to New Zealand Herald.
