A 14-year-old from Newmarket, Ont., is facing a host of charges after a series of hate-motivated incidents across York Region and Toronto, police say.
In a news release Thursday, York police said that in November of last year, officers were notified about calls where a suspect “made anti-Semitic comments over the phone to staff members at synagogues, community centres and Jewish schools.”
A teen was arrested Wednesday in Newmarket as part of the investigation, police say. He now faces charges including 10 counts of mischief relating to religious property and 10 counts of indecent communications.
In a statement, York police Chief Kim MacSween said hate has no place in the region, and the service stands with the Jewish community.
“I am appalled and disappointed a youth feels emboldened to commit these offences,” he said.
“These incidents underscore the need for commitment from all institutions in our society to work together to ensure our youths remain on a positive path forward.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
