Manchester United have confirmed Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires this summer after a request from the Brazilian international.

United made the decision a while ago that the 33-year-old’s contract wouldn’t be renewed or extended and informed Casemiro that was the situation.

But with speculation over his future hitting overdrive in recent weeks, he asked the club to make their plans public in order to “bring external clarity” to the situation, according to a source. Casemiro was keen to avoid incorrect speculation that the club would offer a new contract or trigger an option.

That has become an issue in recent days, with the player holding a clause in his contract that extends his deal by a year if he starts 35 games this season. To hit that clause, he would need to start every remaining fixture, but that won’t be happening.

By making his exit public five months before his contract expires at the end of June, it offers Casemiro and his team time to prepare for next season and plot his move for the 2026/27 campaign, although his focus will remain on United. He was outstanding in Saturday’s derby day win against Manchester City.

The decision not to offer the experienced midfielder a new deal is part of United’s plans to overhaul the squad. Casemiro was signed for an initial £60million from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022, with add-ons taking that fee to £70million. He is also on around £300,000-a-week, a deal that rises to nearer £350,000-a-week if United are in the Champions League.

Getting that salary off the wage bill will help United to fund plans to strengthen the squad this summer, with an overhaul of the midfield planned.

Casemiro, who has 21 goals in 146 games for United so far, said: “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.

“From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.

“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.

“We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”
