Police say they are investigating an ATV crash that left a 39-year-old woman dead earlier this week on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.

On Tuesday around  5:30 p.m. NT. the Whitbourne RCMP detachment says it received a report of two ATVs being involved in an incident on Route 203, near the community of Fairhaven.

“After a mechanical issue, an off-road vehicle operator was being towed by another ATV operator, when both off-road vehicles lost control and overturned. Both riders were ejected,” reads the statement.

While one of the drivers was uninjured, the other driver’s helmet came off when she was thrown and was seriously injured. She was brought to hospital by the health authority’s emergency services personnel. The RCMP say she had since died.

The police say the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is engaged and the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
