The cold weather alert has ended but there is still snow on the way for Waterloo Region.

A yellow cold weather warning was in place Saturday morning, ending shortly before 11 a.m., but a special weather statement for snow on Sunday is still in effect.

Environment Canada shows the temperature across the region is still very cold, with the wind chill hovering in the minus 20’s as of late Saturday morning. 570 meteorologist Allister Aalders says that Southern Ontario is experiencing some of the coldest air of the season.

“Here in Waterloo Region, -13 C is the day time high with a wind chill of -19 this afternoon; we dip down to -19 C tonight with the wind chill of -25,” he said. “Then temperatures are going to hold near -10 C for highs on Sunday and Monday. Overall, a colder pattern has we head towards the end of the month.”

As for the incoming snow, Aalders notes areas closer to the GTA will see the heaviest portion, but the region will see a decent amount, including on the Monday morning drive.

“It will begin as scattered flurries on Sunday morning and then into and through the afternoon, evolving into steady snow which will continue Sunday night and eases into flurries on Sunday night into Monday,” he said.

With the frigid weather, precautions are needed as frostbite can develop in just minutes with exposed skin. If your are working outside, be sure to take regular breaks to warm up.

It also means keeping an eye on family members who may be at risk, as well as pets.

Some symptoms to watch out for with the extreme cold include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness and colour changes in your fingers or toes.
