It you’re sick and tired of winter, it’s time to hunker down. It’s going to be another very cold and snowy day across Ottawa.

Environment Canada has issued a cold warning and snowfall warning for the city, as a winter storm makes its way across Ontario.

The high of -17 C is not as bitterly cold as Saturday, but with the windchill it could still feel closer to -35.

At these temperatures, frostbite can develop in minutes. Watch for numbness and colour change in fingers and toes, as well as symptoms of other cold-related injury and illnesses like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness.

With the cold, another band of heavy snow is expected.

Snow is forecasted to start in the morning, gaining intensity into the afternoon and evening. Snow will taper to light snow or flurries Monday morning. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected.

Northeasterly winds with gusts of 40 to 50 km/h can result in blowing snow making travel challenging.

Environment Canada says there is a likelihood the Monday morning commute will be impacted.

According to the Ottawa International Airport Authority, a number of departures from the airport have been cancelled or delayed.

There has been no word from the Ottawa Carleton District School Board or the Ottawa Catholic School Board on the status of school for Monday.

Clean-up continues

City services have been working hard all winter to deal with the heavy amounts of snow that have fallen.

As of Jan. 23, the City of Ottawa recorded 143.5 cm of snow this season, approximately 15 to 20 cm more than average for this time of year. In addition, the number of snowfall days this year is higher than normal.

The large amount of snow has meant crews have been working hard on clean-up measures to ensure drivers and pedestrians can travel safely.

Despite the heavy snowfall, Quentin Levesque, Director of Roads & Parking Services at the city, told CityNews crews are well prepared to handle the mess.

A winter parking ban will be in effect on Monday, Jan. 26 beginning at 10 a.m.
