Traffic isn’t anything new in Vancouver, but things are about to get much more backed up in the coming months.
According to the provincial transportation ministry, a stretch of Broadway will be closed off to vehicles as construction continues on the SkyTrain extension.
Broadway Closure In Vancouver
While Vancouver is constantly under construction, this stretch of closures will take a considerable number of months. Pedestrians will still have access throughout the construction period, though.
Motorists can expect a complete blocking-off from Main Street to Quebec Street to facilitate further SkyTrain construction plans. More specifically, it is so crews can safely tear down a traffic deck that has been in place since the project’s start. They will also be reinstalling utilities, among other tasks like repaving the roadway and covering the station roof in soil.

Closure Dates
The closure will take place for four months, beginning Monday, January 26. This full-closure was selected by the ministry so that the work can be completed “as quickly as possible.” Still, some businesses have expressed their concern at the time frame. With vehicle traffic down, customers bases have the chance to shrink in the months.
The Broadway Subway project has been underway since 2020, with plans to open in the fall 2027. As “one of North America’s busiest transit thoroughfares”, the Millennium Line’s extension is meant to further connect the city now and in the future. An improved transit service is important for economic growth, especially in the Broadway Corridor.
After the initial closure, the Main Street to Quebec Street stretch will be limited to one lane in each direction for four more months.
