One person suffered critical injuries after an assault at a downtown subway station on Monday night, Toronto police say.

It happened at around 7 p.m. at Wellesley Station, near Yonge and Wellesley streets.

Police said the victim and suspect were on board a northbound subway train when they became engaged in a physical altercation.

“The suspect kicked the victim several times before fleeing the station,” police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

The victim, according to investigators, suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police have not released a detailed description of the suspect.

“Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed or recorded the incident to please contact police,” the news release continued.
