Toronto police say they are searching for an inmate who escaped from a Toronto jail after impersonating another inmate.

According to police, 32-year-old Steven Alexander Guzman Marroquin escaped from the Toronto South Detention Centre shortly before midnight on Monday after impersonating another inmate who was set to be released from custody.

“Under the guise of another inmate, he was fitted with an ankle monitoring device,” police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

The device, police said, was removed at a gas station near the maximum-security correctional facility, located near Horner and Kipling avenues.

Marroquin is now wanted for escaping lawful custody, personation with intent, obstructing a police officer, mischief under $5,000, and theft under $5,000.

Investigators have now released an image of Marroquin, who they describe as five feet, nine inches tall and about 200 pounds. Police said he wears his hair in a ponytail and has a beard.

“Anyone who has information on his whereabouts, do not approach, call 9-1-1 immediately.”
