Police are looking for 32-year-old Steven Alexander Guzman Marroquin, who allegedly escaped by impersonating another inmate set for release.

Toronto police say they are searching for an inmate who escaped from a jail in Etobicoke after allegedly pretending to be another inmate.

According to police, 32-year-old Steven Alexander Guzman Marroquin escaped from the Toronto South Detention Centre shortly before midnight on Monday after impersonating another inmate who was set to be released from custody.

“Under the guise of another inmate, he was fitted with an ankle monitoring device,” they said in a news release.

The device, police said, was removed and located at a gas station near the maximum-security correctional facility, located near Horner and Kipling avenues.

Marroquin is wanted for escaping lawful custody, personation with intent, obstructing a police officer, mischief under $5,000, and theft under $5,000.

Investigators have now released an image of Marroquin, whom they describe as five feet, nine inches tall and about 200 pounds. Police said he wears his hair in a ponytail and has a beard.

Speaking with CP24 late Tuesday afternoon, Const. Cindy Chung would not disclose what the escaped inmate was serving time for at the jail, not would she say what part of the city he might frequent.

Chung could also not say what happened with the other inmate who was supposed to be released and was unable to comment on security procedures at the facility.

“Anyone who knows any information about (Marroquin’s) whereabouts is asked to call police. He is considered dangerous,” Chung said.

“Do not approach and call the police immediately.”
