Yukon RCMP shot and killed a man outside of Whitehorse Tuesday, according to a statement from the force issued Tuesday night.

It happened at approximately 1 p.m. near the McClintock River Bridge in Marsh Lake, about 50 kilometres southeast of Whitehorse, police said.

They said a warrant had been issued for the man’s arrest in relation to a firearms incident over the weekend.

During the interaction with the man, “a police-involved shooting occurred, resulting in the death of the individual,” the statement read.

RCMP, it added, have contacted the Yukon Coroner Service and the Department of Justice, which is the protocol for serious incidents.

A section of the Alaska Highway remains closed Wednesday due to police activity in the area. RCMP spokesperson Calista MacLeod said she expects the closure will remain in place until at least 1 p.m. Wednesday, but could last longer.

There are detours in place at Jake’s Corner and the Carcross Cutoff, via the South Klondike Highway and Tagish road.

Local traffic from the north can access North McClintock Road and Swan Haven Drive but must use the detour at the Carcross Cutoff to travel any further.

Local traffic from the south can access the highway as far as the McClintock Valley Road but must use the detour at Jake’s Corner to access any destinations beyond the road.

RCMP are asking residents to avoid the area and check Yukon 511 for the latest updates on the closure.
