An 80-year-old man has been arrested after a 95-year-old woman was tied up and threatened during an attempted robbery in Salford after being asked about bin collection day, police said.
It is understood an assailant entered the woman’s property in Little Hulton in Salford on Tuesday, tied her hands together, and asked for cash and her purse.
He was disturbed when another woman who knew the victim arrived at the property and confronted the robber, who fled the scene.
Greater Manchester police (GMP) said officers attended an address on Manchester Road, Worsley, on Wednesday and arrested a suspect on suspicion of attempted robbery and false imprisonment.
He remains in custody for questioning, the force said.
No injuries were reported and officers are supporting the victim.
GMP had previously said that a man offered to clean the victim’s windows, but detectives now believe he asked about bin collection day.
Det Insp Paul Davies, from GMP’s Salford district, said on Tuesday: “This was a vile incident in which a woman was tied up and threatened.
“Thankfully, this was not a more serious situation and we commend the brave actions of the lady’s friend who confronted the man and called officers.”
