CLEVELAND, Ohio — Todd Monken is bringing George Warhop back home.
Warhop, who coached the Browns offensive line from 2009-13, was hired away from the Ravens on Wednesday to join new head coach Todd Monken as offensive line coach.
With Warhop’s 29 years of experience as an offensive line coach, the rebuilding line will be in great hands.
Warhop, who coached Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas to four first-team All-Pro selections and five Pro Bowls in his five seasons in Cleveland, has a great reputation throughout the league as one of the best in the business.
In his two seasons as Ravens offensive line coach, they were ranked third in pass block win rate and seventh in run block win rate.
Warhop is one of several Ravens coaches expected to join Monken, who served as offensive coordinator there the past three seasons. He’ll be vying for some of those assistants with new Giants coach John Harbaugh, who was set to hire Monken as offensive coordinator if he didn’t get the Browns job. Warhop and some of the other Ravens assistants were planning to join Monken in New York, and some of them will land in Cleveland instead.
The Browns have also requested an interview with Ravens offensive assistant Danny Breyer, who’s spent the past three season with the Ravens. A graduate of the University of Akron, Breyer worked most closely with tight ends,
In 2023, Breyer performed duties in an offensive quality control capacity with the Ravens, joining the club after three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons as an offensive assistant (2020-21) and run game specialist (2022).
He previously served as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ analytics assistant (2016) before being promoted to defensive assistant coach (2017-18).
Warhop previously spent time with the Texans (2022), Jaguars (2019-21), Buccaneers (2014-18), 49ers (2005-08), Cowboys (2003-04), Cardinals (1998-2002) and Rams (1996-97). Prior to entering the NFL ranks with St. Louis, he served 11 seasons as a collegiate coach and also spent two seasons (1991-92) as the offensive coordinator for the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football.
Monken will likely have to replace all three Browns coordinators given the events of the past few weeks. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who’s under contract through 2026, angrily told staff members that he’s not coming back after being passed over for the head coaching gig, and cleaned out his office, according to NFL Network.
Monken is open to keeping him, a source told cleveland.com, but it remains to be seen if Schwartz will even discuss it.
Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone has received requests from the Steelers and Rams for their coordinator vacancies, and is likely headed to the Rams, a source told cleveland.com, and 2025 offensive coordinator Tommy Rees left to take over that role under Kevin Stefanski in Atlanta.
