Calgary police say speed is likely to blame after a fatal crash Thursday morning on Barlow Trail in the city’s northeast.

Investigators say around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday, a 2025 Kia K4 was travelling northbound on Barlow Trail NE when it hit the traffic media near 7 Avenue NE.

The vehicle then struck a traffic signal pole in the centre median, police add.

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, died at the scene.

Investigators are still working to determine whether alcohol and drug impairment were factors.

Barlow Trail between 4 Avenue and 16 Avenue NW was closed until 10 a.m., causing significant disruptions to the morning commute.

This is Calgary’s second fatal collision of 2026.
