32-year-old Steven Alexander Guzman Marroquin was found and arrested by police near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue East.

Toronto police say they have arrested an inmate who escaped from a jail in Etobicoke after allegedly pretending to be another inmate.

The Toronto Police Service issued a news release on Thursday saying the inmate escaped from the Toronto South Detention Centre shortly before midnight on Monday when he allegedly impersonated another inmate who had been set to be released from custody.

Police said that under the belief that he was another inmate, the suspect was fitted with an ankle monitoring device and released. The monitoring device was later removed at a nearby gas station.

On Wednesday at around 8:30 p.m., police said the Provincial ROPE (Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement) squad located and arrested 32-year-old Steven Alexander Guzman Marroquin of Toronto in the area of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue East.

He has been charged with escaping lawful custody, personation with intent, obstruct police officer, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and two counts of failure to comply with probation.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
