Boston rally draws crowds protesting ICE, Trump administration immigration enforcement

Protesters gathered in frigid Boston on Saturday, for the second consecutive day, to show opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.Organizers said the Saturday protest on Boston Common, near the State House, would feature several speakers.Many attendees carried signs with slogans including, “ICE out everywhere, Boston stands with Minnesota,” and, “Hands off our immigrant neighbors.” A band also played music for the crowd. On Friday, another large anti-ICE protest gathered outside the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, and several Boston-area businesses showed support for the movement by either closing or showing protest signs of their own.Earlier this week, Gov. Maura Healey proposed legislation and an executive order limiting immigration enforcement in Massachusetts.The governor’s proposal would bar U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from conducting warrantless civil arrests in courthouses, schools, child care programs, hospitals and places of worship. It would also allow parents to prearrange temporary guardianship for children if they are detained or deported, her office said. Healey’s executive order limits new agreements allowing state or local cooperation with ICE unless there is a certified public safety need, bans civil ICE arrests in nonpublic areas of state facilities without a judicial warrant and prohibits the use of state property as staging areas for immigration enforcement, according to the administration.
