Frank Lampard has issued an impassioned message to Coventry City fans that their players will “fight” and “give everything” to get the club’s automatic promotion drive back on course.

The Sky Blues boss insists the team need their continued “amazing” backing after seeing their ten point lead at the top of the Championship fizzle out over the last couple of months – the club is now level on points with Middlesbrough in the automatic spots.

Fans are understandably beginning to get a bit nervous, and asked after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at QPR what his message to the Sky Blue Army is, the City boss said: “Well, we’re always thankful for their support. I’ve been here a year and a bit and I’ve been amazed by the strength of support, the backing, and the team and the players need them as much as ever. And I know that they give that all the time.

“I think the thing that they need to know is that we and the players are fighting for every bit of it. It’s different territory for the players at the moment. I think we can say that openly that it is different territory to be fighting at the top of the league consistently.

“Teams are really trying to beat you and the pressure that’s coming from behind rather than last year, for instance, when we were trying to climb the table. It’s different. And, of course, the challenge of that in the last month we haven’t done well enough.

“But for the fans, just to know that we’re going to give everything for that and we need them. And I know we’ve got them but we need to show that we can do it.”
