Commuters going through Toronto’s Union Station may see delays due to a “disabled” train near the major downtown terminal.
The issue was first reported shortly after the start of service on Monday morning and resulted in a challenging morning commute for many GTA residents.
While repair personnel work on the issue, Metrolinx says commuters may see delays of up to two hours. In an update shortly after 12:20, the transit agency downgraded the wait times, saying delays may set commuters back up to 60 minutes.
Based on the GO’s website, as of 12:30 p.m., all seven train lines that service through Union are hit with significant delays.
Two trains on the Kitchener line, scheduled to depart the downtown Toronto terminal at 11:40 a.m. and 12:04 p.m., have been cancelled, as well as two Stouffville line trains that were scheduled to leave at noon and 1 p.m.
Chopper footage taken over near Union Station shortly before noon shows what appears to be a partially derailed train with part of the vehicle parked diagonally across two railway tracks. A crew of repair workers can be seen analyzing the scene.
Trips will be cancelled or modified until the issue has been completely resolved, the transit network adds, as trains will not be able to pass through the area until then.
“Trains will travel as far as possible and hold at stations,” Metrolinx said on its website, encouraging commuters to take the TTC as another mode of transport in the meantime.
UP Express was temporarily suspended but in an update shortly before noon, the service says commuters may have to experience “longer than usual” wait times between trains.
It is unclear at this time when exactly the repair work will be completed and when trains will be running as scheduled.
The UP Express trains are now back in service. Travellers may experience longer than normal wait times, Metrolinx says. https://t.co/nf0c3eBAgr
