Sophie Grégoire Trudeau is reframing single life ahead of Valentine’s Day. On Saturday, the 50-year-old author and mental health activist addressed the stigma of being single later in life in a new newsletter to fans and followers.
“Fine, I’ll admit it,” Grégoire Trudeau began. “On the surface, being ‘uncoupled’ at 50 on Valentine’s Day doesn’t make me feel amazing.”
The mother of three, who was married to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for 18 years before separating in 2023, acknowledged that Valentine’s Day messaging can feel particularly “loud.”
“Midlife singlehood isn’t a failure,” she wrote. “Often, it’s a recalibration — a moment where the noise gets quiet enough for us to hear our own voice again. “
For Grégoire Trudeau, building self-love is key to undoing years of feeling as though “our bodies, our emotions, our authenticity need adjusting to be accepted.”
“Self-love is a practice,” she said. “At its core, it’s safety. and safety comes from presence.”

The message, although timely for many, is particularly vulnerable for Grégoire Trudeau, who rarely discusses personal matters, especially those related to her now-separated husband.
For most of 2025, Trudeau made headlines for his burgeoning relationship with pop icon Katy Perry. The former leader of the Liberal Party of Canada joined Perry during The Lifetimes Tour and, most recently, attended the World Economic Forum together in Davos, Switzerland.
Although neither Trudeau nor Perry has spoken publicly about their relationship, it’s the former politician’s first public relationship since he and Grégoire Trudeau announced they were ending their 18-year marriage in 2023.

In 2025, as the first images of Trudeau and Perry surfaced online, Yahoo Canada spoke with Grégoire Trudeau about navigating media interest in her personal life while adjusting to life as a co-parent.
“When stuff happens in my life, my body will react. I’m a human being. I will like it [or] I will dislike it. I’ll want to cry, scream or whatever — I let that out. Those emotions arise very quickly. The body gives you all the cues to what’s happening. I let it out. … There’s what’s said in the media and then there’s my life,” she said.
She continued, “If I decide to let that define me, I lose myself. This is true for me and for every human being on the planet. If you let the outside world define you, you won’t have the sacredness of knowing who you are. … I also see others’ behaviours in a different light, and I try to have compassion.”

It’s apparent that the former prime minister and unofficial first lady of Canada appear to be dedicated to putting their children, 18-year-old Xavier, 16-year-old Ella-Grace and 11-year-old Hadrien, first.
“I’m definitely not a single mom. I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children,” she said in a November 2025 interview with Arlene Dickinson for her podcast “Arlene is Alone.”
“No family will say that politics is easy to navigate — no,” she said. “When you go out there, the partner and the man that you love and your kids are under physical and psychological stress and safety issues. That’s hard to face as a family. I can’t say that I’m a single mom because we’ve raised these kids together. … We call each other up, we text each other, we’ve really tried to feel cohesion so that the kids feel cohesion. … We have separate lives but we have one family life. … it’s not always easy to live, but it’s very adult.”
