Devastating first photographs have emerged from the crash site after a light aircraft went down on moorland above Rochdale.

A huge emergency services response is currently ongoing near Littleborough.

Two people are believed to have been on board the plane at the time, but there’s been no confirmation of any casualties or injuries as yet.

It’s understood police, ambulances and firefighters have been mobilised to an area of moorland between Blackstone Edge and Hollingworth Lake, with specialist rescue crews also said to be in attendance.

The image shows what appears to be a parachute wrapped around an electricity pylon at the scene.

Witnesses said an onboard parachute appeared to release from the plane before it went down.

Whittaker Lane, which leads down to Whittaker Golf Club, has been closed by police due to the scale of the emergency response.

Emergency services vehicles, meanwhile, have been pictured lined up in rows on country lanes near the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed multiple fire crews arrived on the scene at around 11.30am on Tuesday.

Parachute on Pylon at Littleborough plane crash

Firefighters are said to be supporting crews from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service, with conditions at the scene said to be windy and foggy.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which investigates civil aircraft incidents, has issued a statement confirming a team of ‘inspectors’ has been sent to the scene and that an official investigation has been launched.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “Emergency services are responding to reports of a light aircraft crash in the Littleborough area.

“We are currently in attendance to establish the full circumstances and assess any casualties.

“A scene is in place whilst emergency service workers conduct their enquiries and people are asked to avoid the area as this work is carried out.”

Further updates from the emergency services are expected.

No further details have been revealed.
