The snooker great John Virgo has died at the age of 79, World Snooker has announced.
Virgo, who won the UK Championship in 1979, enjoyed a successful playing career but was best known for his broadcasting.
A World Snooker announcement read: “This morning it was confirmed that ‘JV’ had died in Spain, where he had lived in recent years. He is survived by his wife Rosie and children Gary and Brook-Leah.”
Virgo’s commentary became an established part of the BBC’s snooker coverage after he retired from playing in 1994, famous for his catchphrase ‘Where’s the cue ball going?’.
He was also well known for his role on the snooker show Big Break, that ran from 1991 to 2002, and was a regular on the exhibition circuit with his wide array of trick shots.
Also in 1979, he progressed to the semi-finals of the world championship at the Crucible in Sheffield, losing to Dennis Taylor, then being defeated by Eddie Charlton in a third-place match.
His UK Championship success at the Preston Guild Hall featured victories against Tony Meo, Steve Davis and Taylor before a 14-13 final triumph against Terry Griffiths.
His final commentary on the BBC came on 18 January when Kyren Wilson defeated John Higgins 10-6 in the Masters final at Alexandra Palace.

“Everyone at World Snooker Tour is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary snooker player and broadcaster John Virgo, aged 79,” a World Snooker statement read. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, JV.”
The four-times world champion Mark Selby wrote on X: “So sad to hear the news of the passing of John Virgo!!! Such a great guy and a huge character!! He Will be greatly missed! RIP JV.”
Neil Robertson, the 2010 world champion, said: “He was a great character and an amazing pundit and commentator. I had the pleasure of sharing the booth with him during the World Championship a couple of years ago in which I got a huge appreciation for how good he was. We’ve lost some great people of our game just recently which is incredibly sad.”
