Toronto police are appealing for witnesses and information after a pedestrian was fatally struck during a collision involving a tractor-trailer in North York on Tuesday morning.

The crash happened near Steeles Avenue West and Petrolia Road, in the vicinity of Keele Street.

In a news release, police said they were called to that area at around 9:20 a.m. for a pedestrian struck – personal injury collision.

They say the driver of a tractor-trailer transport truck was heading northbound on Petrolia approaching Steeles. At the same time, a pedestrian was crossing Steeles from the south to north on the east side of the intersection. The motorist and the pedestrian collided.

Police said a 30-year-old man was rushed from the scene to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but was later pronounced dead.

The name of the victim has not been release as investigators work to notify his next of kin.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene, they said.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, police said it is too early to say if charges will be laid.

The collision reconstruction team attended scene and officers are now reviewing security video from the area.

The eastbound lanes of Steeles Avenue were closed at Petrolia Road due to the investigation.
