A sprinkler pipe burst at Mount Dennis station on Monday, resulting in flooding on the light rail platform.

Video posted on Reddit on Wednesday shows water streaming down from the ceiling, flowing along the platform of the soon-to-be-open Eglinton Crosstown LRT.

In a statement to CTV News, Metrolinx confirmed that a sprinkler pipe burst due to extreme temperatures.

“The pipe has since been fixed and clean up of the station has been completed. We have not seen this issue at other stations across the line,” Metrolinx senior manager of media relations Lyndsay Miller said.

While Mount Dennis Station has been open to GO, UP Express and TTC bus customers since Nov. 16, the portion where the LRT platform is located has been blocked off.

The incident happened the day after the TTC officially announced the long-delayed Eglinton Crosstown LRT will start service on Sunday.

The transit agency says it will be a phased opening so that the TTC and Metrolinx can fine-tune operations.

“This allows us to monitor performance, validate it collectively, and also allows upgrades that we know are coming to be phased in in a controlled manner,” TTC CEO Mandeep Lali said on Tuesday.

“We’ll be leveraging customer feedback, again, taking on the lessons from Line 6 (Finch West LRT), holding the right teams accountable.”

Line 5 will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

The TTC says light rail vehicles will arrive every four minutes during the busiest periods and every six to eight minutes at other times.

Line 5, which is 19 kilometres long and fully accessible, has 25 stops and runs between Mount Dennis in the west and Kennedy Station in Scarborough.

On Sunday, the public can get on Line 5 for free.
