Polls closed at 8 p.m. Thursday in a special primary election in New Jersey aimed at selecting the candidates who hope to fill the vacant congressional seat that had been held by Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

The packed primary election in the 11th congressional district includes 11 Democrats all fighting for their party’s nomination to run in another special election to be held on April 16.

Thursday’s election includes only one Republican candidate seeking his party’s bid for the April election. So the GOP nomination is a lock for Joe Hathaway, the former mayor of Randolph in Morris County.

Here are the preliminary results of the special primary election, compiled by the Associated Press. The results will be updated throughout the night and on Friday, so please check back for the updated vote totals.

Preliminary election results

The 11th congressional district includes towns in Morris, Essex and Passaic counties.

Heading into the special election, the four leading candidates were considered to be Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, former U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski, former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, and Analilia Mejia, the former national political director for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign.

Venture capitalist and Army veteran Zach Beecher and Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett are also in the top of the mix in the Democratic primary battle.

Two candidates — Marc Chaaban, a former intern in Sherrill’s congressional office, and Dean Dafis, a former Maplewood mayor — suspended their campaigns but were still listed on the election ballot.
