Two daily temperature records were broken on Vancouver Island on Wednesday, while two all-time monthly records were set on the mainland for high temperatures.

On Vancouver Island, daily temperature records were broken in Qualicum Beach and Port Hardy.

In Qualicum Beach, temperatures reached a high of 14.5°C on Wednesday, making it the warmest Feb. 4 since records began in 1962.

The previous record was 13.6°C set in 2011 in Qualicum Beach.

Meanwhile, temperatures hit 13.8°C in Port Hardy on Wednesday, beating the old record of 12.4°C set on Feb. 4, 1992.

Records have been kept in Port Hardy since 1944, according to Environment Canada.

Monthly records set on the mainland

Meanwhile, two communities saw their hottest February day ever recorded on Wednesday.

The Bella Bella area recorded a high of 19.5°C, making it the warmest day of the month on record.

The previous record was 16.4°C set on Feb. 4, 1930 and Feb. 24, 1981.

Meanwhile, the Tatlayoko Lake Area set a new high of 18.1°C on Wednesday, beating the old record of 17.8°C set on Feb 7, 1930.

Environment Canada says the balmy temperatures were due to a “building ridge of high pressure” that was pushing an “unseasonably warm airmass” over the province.

The weather office notes that the temperature records are preliminary.
