The 2026 Olympic Games have officially begun, with the opening ceremony that took place at the San Siro Olympic Stadium in Milan.
Events were spread across multiple locations, with ceremonies in the Games’ co-host cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, alongside smaller events in surrounding mountain regions. In a first for the Games, two cauldrons hold the Olympic flame — one in Milan and the other in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Canadian freestyle skiers and Olympic champions Mikaël Kingsbury and Marielle Thompson served as the flag bearers for Team Canada. The ceremony also included a special tribute to Italian designer and architect Bruno Munari and late fashion designer Giorgio Armani. On the music front, American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed.
Given Milan’s history as one of the world’s fashion capitals, expect to see plenty of standout outfits and style moments throughout the Games. You can keep up with all of the Olympic coverage on CBC Gem from Feb. 6-22.
