Squirrel stops play at Hull City vs Bristol City game

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic joked that the promotion-chasing Tigers should try and sign up the resident squirrel that made an appearance during Saturday’s 3-2 home loss to Bristol City.

Play was twice stopped in the second half at the MKM Stadium by referee Oliver Langford, after the squirrel gave City‘s groundstaff the run-around, much to the amusement of the 21,000 inside the stadium.

The local resident slipped past home goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, who tried in vain to stop it in its tracks, before beating visiting stopper Radek Vitek.

At one point, the squirrel escaped the attention of staff and scarpered up the LED advertising boards and away, before returning a short while later, to huge roars from the crowd.

The whole escapade generated significant interest from the MKM Stadium crowd, the majority of whom were disappointed by that point after seeing their side throw away a first-half lead given to them by Oli McBurnie’s fine strike after 24 minutes.

The stoppages halted the visitors’ momentum, with the hosts coming back into the game through Kieran Dowell’s crisp finish, but in the 10 minutes added on at the end because of the interruptions, Jakirovic’s men couldn’t salvage anything.

Despite his obvious frustration about his side’s first loss in six games, Jakirovic still found time to deliver his typically humorous response to an impressive display from the on-pitch performer.

“In Croatia, it is a dog,” he joked. “You can’t catch the dog, my friend, because he can attack you. It will be a dog or a cat, but here is this squirrel. He was very fast; we should sign the squirrel.”
