I haven’t seen coverage of this here yet.
Starlink has cut off access to Russia. While it is not clear yet how much disruption this will cause to the Russian military, some are saying that this action will effectively disrupt the command and control structure on the front and affect internet connected drones. I don’t really have anything to add, other that I am rather surprised that Musk made this move.
Ukraine says Starlink terminals used by Russia deactivated in blow to Moscow
KYIV, Feb 5 (Reuters) – Starlink internet terminals used by Russian troops in Ukraine have been deactivated, Kyiv said on Thursday, dealing what one official said was a big battlefield setback for Moscow that had disrupted assault operations.
Russian forces have made unauthorised use of thousands of satellite-based Starlink internet connections for secure communications after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Kyiv says.
SpaceX has a new way to block Russian Starlink access, and Ukrainians are hailing it as a ‘catastrophe’ for Moscow
SpaceX moved to cut off Russian access to Starlink this week, disabling connectivity over Ukraine while maintaining a whitelist of approved Ukrainian terminals.
The new measure has spurred excitement among Ukrainian officials and pundits close to the war, who have said that Russian troops were increasingly using Starlink to guide long-range strikes and coordinate forces.
Some say “I don’t get my news from YouTube,” which to me is like saying “I don’t get my news from magazines.” There are major British and European English news outlets which provide the best coverage of the Ukraine crisis and Russian news such as as Times Radio, Kyiv Post, etc. that you won’t see anywhere else. Times Radio and the Times Trump Report provides excellent, in-depth interviews with luminaries like Sir Bill Browder, Professor Scott Lucas, Institute for the Study of War, LT Gen Ben Hodges, Gen. Petraes, etc along and retired US and British diplomats and military.
Additionally, I have learned many new things about how to use my cordless drill and how to use the one-two switch on the top from YouTube. 😉
The amazing Bill Browder — His grandfather was arrested and incarcerated for being a Communist. He was ejected by Russia and lobbied Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act after his friend Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested for investigating Russian corruption and died in prison.
Jay in Kiev is an excellent YouTube channel. You have to get past the clickbait and hyperbole in the title but he provides real on-the-spot reporting on conditions in Kiev.
