Four men have been arrested after a man died following an attack in the early hours. At around 1.30am on Sunday, February 1 a group of people assaulted two men on Oakfield Road in Anfield following a disagreement. The group then fled from the scene.
Merseyside Police responded to the scene, where a 53-year-old man had swelling to his face and a 54-year-old man sustained head and rib injuries. Both victims declined medical attention, the force said.
Following the incident the 54-year-old man returned home to Scarborough, where he died last Tuesday (February 3). A post-mortem examination is set to take place to establish his cause of death.
Two men from Croxteth, aged 28 and 20, a 47-year-old man from Clubmoor and a 24-year-old man from Old Swan were arrested on suspicion of causing Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent. They have been released on bail and enquiries continue.
CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or motorists who were in the area at that time to contact them.
It is believed that two taxi drivers had pulled over during the incident and a member of the public was present, who may have captured part of the incident on their phone.
Detective Inspector Natalie Charlesworth said: “First and foremost our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who has died.
“We are appealing for anyone with information on the assault to please come forward to assist the investigation.
“North Yorkshire Police are leading the investigation into his death. We are keeping an open mind until we know the cause of death, and are conducting extensive enquiries so his family can get answers.
“We are aware that people were in the area and may have witnessed the incident and we urge them to please contact us as soon possible.
“We also very keen to speak to the two taxi drivers and the member of the public to please contact us as a matter of urgency.”
