One man is dead following a fiery crash that closed a stretch of Highway 1 in northeast Calgary for several hours on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to 16 Avenue NE near the Stoney Trail exit ramps around 2 p.m. for reports of a vehicle on fire.

According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), when fire crews arrived, they found a passenger vehicle heavily damaged, up against a post, and fully engulfed in flames.

Several bystanders had stopped and were attempting to control the fire with extinguishers.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and extricated the vehicle’s lone occupant. The individual was unresponsive and showed signs “incompatible with life.”

No other injuries are reported.

Calgary Police confirm they are investigating the cause of the crash.

16 Avenue NE was closed in both directions at Stoney for several hours. The road reopened around 6:30 p.m.
