Thirty-three people were on the bus at the time of the crash, and all occupants are accounted for. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
CALHOUN COUNTY, Iowa — One person is dead and multiple people are injured following a rollover bus accident on Highway 4 in Calhoun County, according to Iowa State Patrol. Iowa Lakes Community College confirmed that members of its baseball team were involved in the accident.
Around 11:06 a.m., the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a crash involving an Iowa Lakes Community College bus, and a trooper arrived on scene a few minutes later, according to a release from the Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency.
Iowa State Patrol said the bus went off the road and overturned in the ditch. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.Â
Thirty-three people were on the bus at the time of the crash, and all occupants are accounted for. Due to the number of people involved in the accident, emergency responders declared a Mass Causality Incident. Local fire departments, emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
Officials say 32 occupants were triaged and taken to various local hospitals. Due to the severity of injuries, multiple medical helicopters were requested to help transport patients.
Iowa State Patrol did not identify the person killed, but told Local 5 that the injuries range from minor to serious. The crash remains under investigation.
Six occupants in an Iowa Lakes van were not involved in the accident.
In a statement, Iowa Lakes Community College said it will not be releasing names or additional details at this time. However, Iowa Lakes is working with local authorities to learn more about the accident.Â
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the college said in a statement. “The College is actively supporting those affected and communicating directly with families.”
Iowa Highway 4 was closed in both directions due to the crash, which occurred just north of the Twin Lakes area.
Rep. Randy Feenstra, who represents Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, said he was “deeply concerned” about the accident.Â
“I am grateful to our local law enforcement, Iowa state patrol, first responders, and medical professionals who have been quickly responding at the scene,” Feenstra said.Â
The Iowa Lakes baseball team was traveling to Arkansas for a game against the North Arkansas Pioneers. In a post on Facebook, the Pioneers said in part, “We ask our entire community to please lift up everyone involved, their families, and the entire Iowa Lakes community in prayer during this difficult time.”
