Canada has secured its fourth Olympic medal in Italy.

After scoring a 131.56 in the free dance section of the Olympic ice dance competition, Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier skated onto the podium with a bronze medal. This is the first figure skating medal for Canada at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games. It was the pair’s third time competing at the Olympics, after Beijing 2022 and PyeongChang 2018.

Gilles and Poirier’s total score of 217.74 was bested only by Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates (224.39) and France’s Laurence Beaudry Fournier and Guillaume Cizeron (225.82).

It was the first Canadian medal in Olympic ice dance since Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir captured gold in 2018.

This is the first Olympic medal for Gilles and Poirier, who have been skating together since 2011. The duo dazzled in the rhythm dance section of the competition, placing third with a score of 86.18. They then took things home with a beautiful performance in the free skate set to Gavardo’s cover of “Vincent,” which was originally performed by Don McLean.

The duo nearly helped Canada get on the podium in the team event last week, but came up just short for a fifth-place finish. This was the last Olympic event, and possibly the last competitive dance, that both Gilles and Poirier were set to compete in.

Canada now has four Olympic medals at Milano Cortina 2026. Speed skater Valérie Maltais kicked things off with a women’s 3,000-metre bronze medal last week. Freestyle skier Megan Oldham then followed that up with a bronze medal finish in women’s slopestyle.

The Canadian mixed-team short-track speed skating team captured the country’s only silver medal earlier this week.

It was a successful Olympic debut for the pair, who will now head back to Canada as Olympic medalists.
