An assault incident in Uptown Waterloo has turned fatal, and police have laid a charge of manslaughter.

Waterloo regional police responded to a reported assault at a King Street North business around 12:45 a.m. on Feb. 9. Officers found a man unconscious due to a head injury, and he was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The next day, the 62-year-old died as a result of the sustained injuries.

The family identified the deceased as Brian Donovan. His wife Judy released a statement saying the “fun-loving” dog father was known by his family as Bugs.

“Our family is devastated by this senseless act of violence,” it reads. “As we grapple with this unimaginable loss, we choose to focus on the beautiful life Brian lived and the legacy of his many joys in life cooking for friends on his smoker, playing with his dogs and travelling with his wife Judy. They shared great times with their family and friends. We will cherish those lovely memories.”

Police have arrested a 37-year-old Kitchener man, who has been charged with manslaughter.

While police continue to investigate, they say it was an isolated incident and no weapons were used.

Donovan’s family said they are grateful for emergency responders who “did the best they could to help him.”
