We are disappointed to read the comments made by Sir Jim Ratcliffe in a media interview this week, including his description of the UK as having been “colonised by immigrants”.

Those remarks are not consistent with the values of the Royal Society of Chemistry, or with the inclusive culture we work to build across the chemical sciences. Having presented publicly the next phase of our inclusion and diversity strategy just two days ago, our commitment to inclusivity is as strong as it ever has been.

Our Code of Conduct applies to all RSC members. It sets clear expectations, including that members should encourage inclusivity, protect the dignity and welfare of the community, respect others, and be aware of, and limit, bias.

We take those expectations seriously and will continue to work hard to ensure our community remains a place where everyone feels respected, supported and able to thrive.
