The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating after a fatal crash on Highway 407 at Highway 404 in Markham.
Police say a fuel tanker truck and a passenger vehicle were involved in the crash just before 2:30 p.m. on the southbound ramp leading onto Highway 407.
“My understanding is the passenger vehicle was broken down or disabled in one of the live lanes of the westbound lanes of the 407,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a social media post. “While it was sitting there in that live lane with the driver inside that vehicle, it was struck by a tractor-trailer. The driver inside was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The driver of the tractor-trailer did not suffer any physical injuries as a result of the crash.
All northbound and southbound ramps on Highway 404 leading to the westbound lanes on Highway 407 are closed for the investigation. All traffic approaching Highway 407 westbound to Highway 404 will be forced off.
Police say it will be several hours before the westbound lanes are reopened.
