The Blackburn Rovers strikers were both recalled into the starting XI against Queens Park Rangers and made an impact. Jorgensen scored two goals whilst Gudjohnsen worked hard on his first start since December.

It helped unlock Rovers’ attack, which has been struggling since Gudjohnsen’s hamstring injury against Millwall. Prior to that, the Icelandic forward had struck a good partnership with Yuki Ohashi.

What’s evident is all three forward benefit from playing together and O’Neill believes it’s a partnership that can blossom on the evidence of their display at Loftus Road.

“It was a brilliant pass from Mori, a great little piece of play,” O’Neill said.

“We looked at playing forward early, we felt if we did that, hence the benefit of playing with the two strikers and it was a great pass, great finish.

“The front two I think have a lot in them, they’re still young but I thought the distance they covered, how they played off each other, it’s quite hard to find two strikers that can play together well.

“There are a lot of strikers that can only play as a single striker now and I thought they played really well off each other and we’re the first line of defence as well.”

The shift to 4-4-2 was planned before O’Neill’s arrival with Todd Cantwell injured. It helped gives Rovers a much bigger goal threat and occupied QPR’s backline.

It gave more options for the likes of Ryoya Morishita too. He produced his best display in a Rovers shirt and showed his versatility playing his three different positions across midfield.

“It was Damien. He felt that the two up top would benefit us,” O’Neill revealed.

“I think Gudjohnsen has been out for a while. At times in this league as well your selection and your tactics are very much determined by the availability you have as well and we might not have had that availability in recent weeks as well.

“Having the two boys fit and being able to play at the top end of the pitch and give us what they gave us in and out of possession was a real bonus today.

“We had to defend a free kick early in the second half and then we get a little bit of play up on the right-hand side and it’s a great little cross from Sonny and obviously it’s a great finish from Mori as well.

“We made that change, shifting Mori to the left from the right at half-time, bringing Lewis on and then obviously he’s in a great position then because he’s in the box and a fantastic header.”

Around 1,000 travelling fans got to enjoy three points on their return to Lancashire. The positivity will hopefully bleed into next week’s local derby against Preston North End.

O’Neill thanked the fans and was quick to stress that performance  is the standards that Rovers must maintain.

“We got great support. Really good. Almost 1,000 fans I believe that travelled down,” he said.

“That makes a big difference and we need that support hopefully home and away. You have to deliver as a team as well. We have to deliver again.

“We can’t make this a one-off and let our standards drop but the supporters were fabulous today and we really, really appreciate that.

“I’m not really bothered about people singing my name. As long as they bring back the team, it’s not important to me. The important thing is that they’re behind the team and the players feel that.

“Hopefully, we gave them something so the trip back will be better for them and hopefully then they can go into the game against Preston in a positive frame of mind and we can deliver again.”
