WASHINGTON (7News) — An 18-year-old carrying a loaded shotgun ran toward the U.S. Capitol just after noon on Tuesday, according to U.S. Capitol Police (USCP).

Police officers challenged the person to drop his weapon at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building, and he complied. He was taken into custody by the USCP officers.

Authorities said the man was wearing a tactical vest and had multiple rounds of ammunition on his person.

A helmet and gas mask were found in his white Mercedes SUV, which was parked in the 100 block of Maryland Avenue, authorities said.

There does not appear to be an ongoing threat or any other suspects, police said.

The man was arrested near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building, according to USCP.

The motive was immediately known. Authorities described the suspect as an 18-year-old who does not live in the area.
