LOS ANGELES — Eric Dane, the actor best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan – “Dr. McSteamy” – on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has died. He was 53.
Dane revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with ALS. His announcement drew widespread attention as he publicly shared how the illness was affecting his body.
A look back at Eric Dane’s career
Dane’s 35-year career in television and film included his breakout on “Grey’s Anatomy,” where he first appeared in early 2006 and went on to feature in 145 episodes.
His early credits included a brief appearance on “Saved By The Bell,” followed by roles on series such as “Roseanne,” “Silk Stalkings” and “Charmed.”
In 2014, On The Red Carpet spoke with Dane about his lead role in the naval drama “The Last Ship.”
“We’re just trying to make the Navy proud,” Dane said at the time. “It’s a big show. It’s ambitious, and I think we’re pulling it off. We love the Navy.”
More recently, he played the father of Jacob Elordi’s character in the HBO series “Euphoria.”
His film work included appearances in “Marley & Me” and 2024’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”
Last year, he starred in the dramatic crime thriller series “Countdown.”
Dane, a father of two, often credited his ex-wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, as his biggest champion and most stalwart supporter during his battle with ALS.
He spoke candidly about living with the disease in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer that aired last June.
“I will never forget those three letters,” he said. “It’s on me the second I wake up … it’s not a dream.”
Reflecting on the fight he faced, Dane said, “I’m fighting as much as I can. There’s so much about it that’s out of my control.”
