CHICAGO — Chicagoans have chosen six snowplow names for the city’s annual “You Name A Snowplow” contest.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation revealed the winners Monday following a two-week voting period. It was the fourth year the city has held the contest. Chicagoans submit name ideas online, and the city selects the top 25 names to advance to a public vote.
This year’s winners:
Abolish ICE
Stephen Coldbert
Pope Frío XIV
The Blizzard of Oz
Svencoolie
Caleb Chilliams
“Abolish ICE” and other anti-ICE names made up nearly 80 percent of all submissions, Block Club previously reported.
The city received 13,300 name entries and 39,000 voters — a record for both, according to the Streets and Sanitation department.
“Chance the Scraper” received an honorable mention from the city, finishing less than 1 percentage point behind “Caleb Chilliams.”
“I want to thank the people of Chicago for their unmatched creativity, sense of humor and civic pride,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a press release. “We are grateful for the record-breaking participation and encourage Chicagoans to continue interacting and engaging with local government.”
Each winning name will be displayed on a snowplow in one of the city’s six snow districts. Residents who first submitted the winning names will get the chance to take a photo with the named snowplow and receive city swag, according to Streets and Sanitation.
The newly named vehicles will join a fleet of more than 300 salt spreaders responsible for maintaining 9,400 lane miles during winter storms. Chicagoans can monitor the plows, including the freshly christened ones, through the city’s real-time plow tracker.
