As the home side were about to take a corner, the centre-back lashed out at Hibs midfielder Jamie McGrath, who fell to the ground following the contact being made to his arm.

After being contacted by Grant Irvine at Clydesdale House to look at the incident, referee Matthew MacDermid conducted an on-field review, which resulted in a red card for the USA international.

Now, following their appeal, Trusty’s dismissal has been upheld, with the 27-year-old defender now set to miss Celtic’s next three matches, including this Sunday’s Glasgow Derby vs Rangers.

After the game, Celtic interim manager Martin O’Neill reacted to the incident in his post-match press conference. “Well, I’ve just had a word with the referee, and he said that he was going to just have a word with the two players, first of all, then I think VAR intervened and said that it was violent conduct,” he said.

“Yeah, I’ve spoken to him (Trusty). At the end of it all, you can’t do this. These are the rules now. It doesn’t matter whether somebody’s holding on to you at all.

“In an attempt to break away, you can’t, I think, thrust down in the manner in which he did. So I’ve been told that’s called violent conduct.”
