I lost count of how many texts and DMs I received this week when people found out I was in Mexico.

You know what I’m talking about, of course…

Mainstream media, every travel publication, and numerous U.S. government-backed alerts had left loved ones and travelers with bags packed and ready to go in a tizzy.

We won’t go into the violent details of what’s already been widely reported, but what we know for sure is that one of Mexico’s most popular beach havens is quite literally one of your safest bets for a seamless, stress-free vacation.

You know — one where you don’t have to be glued to news reports, wondering if your departure airport is going to shut down.

Home to some of Mexico’s most luxe resorts, astounding scenery, incredible restaurants, and a longstanding reputation for being reliably safe for tourists, we at Travel Off Path are in lockstep with expert insiders claiming Cabo to be as blissful and enjoyable as it’s ever been, despite what you may hear in the news.

Cabo Has Green Light For Safe Travel

There’s no better boots-on-the-ground experts than the team at The Cabo Sun.

Their trusted insiders are reporting a “Vacation As Normal” green light, while some (ahem, my family) still find themselves hesitant to venture anywhere south of the border.

Obviously, when things go haywire to this level, there’s a certain level of unpredictability about retaliatory actions as nobody expected what the inpenetrable blockades and even gunfire that took place across multiple regions of Mexico, including some heavily populated tourist areas.

Fortunately, that was never the case in southern Baja, especially in well-protected vacation spots.

While even my flight back home from a fellow safe haven, Cancun, was in question, Cabo was never in the equation.

Travelers can feel at ease venturing down to Baja’s southernmost point, but the “Baja” part was what drew confusion in the first place.

The ‘Baja’ Blunder

Let’s be real — when you think Baja, you think Cabo.

Well, except my fat you-know-what who hates how hard it is to find a Baja Fresh anymore, but I digress…

Within the past 72 hours, the U.S. Mission to Mexico released an official security alert, explicitly including “Baja California State (including Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada)”.

Mexico can be a bit confusing for those not geography majors. Even seasoned travelers like myself can’t always remember which cities belong to which states, and that’s especially mind-boggling for Cabo.

There is a difference between Baja California and Baja California Sur, which led some who were already in Cabo or those with immediate travel plans to become worried about their trip.

Cabo was never in danger, and very rarely is it included in any major security reports.

Baja California is home to the aforementioned Tecate, Ensenada, and Tijuana, which all 3 saw vehicles lit on fire to stop highway traffic.

Baja California Sur is home to such places as Todos Santos, La Paz, and Cabo, all of which were never under any serious threat, nor was it under the ‘shelter in place’ coming from the U.S. State Department.

It’s easy to see the mix-up, but the reality is vacationers have been sippin’ margs, enjoying sunset cruises, kicking back along Blue Flag beaches, and sticking their forks in world-class cuisine like any other day in paradise.

Travelers Are Backing Up Our Claim

Listen — we’re not here to downplay safety concerns at all, but sources matter.

Would you rather believe a talking head who probably thinks authentic tacos are hard shells, lightly-seasoned ground beef, and (questionable) shredded yellow cheese, or would you rather believe real-time input from travelers?

Yeah, we know the answer…

Not to toot our own horn by any means, but our new Travel Security Index shows what Cabo tourists are really experiencing this very moment — and they show the second highest scores for any destination in in the world right now with 90/100 (subject to change).

For sample size, Puerto Vallarta, is currently sitting at 44/100, and continuing to see a boost as days go on as their security situation steadily improves from when this vacation hotspot was under siege earlier this week.
