Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) – NEA participates in full-scale emergency response exercise
The NEA participated in a full-scale emergency exercise on 24-25 June 2025 that was designed to test and strengthen international emergency response arrangements and capabilities in the event of a severe nuclear or radiological emergency.
The 2025 edition of the ConvEx-3 exercise, organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by Romania, simulated a severe accident at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant in Romania. It involved 85 national and international organisations over a 36-hour period.
The NEA participated as a member of the Inter-Agency Committee on Radiological and Nuclear Emergencies (IACRNE), testing its emergency response arrangements as outlined in the Joint Radiation Emergency Plan of the International Organisation (JPLAN). In alignment with this plan, the NEA has specific objectives to survey and report on the governmental decisions and recommendations implemented in non-accident countries. The exercise also tested the NEA’s internal and external communications responses.
The NEA is collaborating with the rest of IACRNE organisations to analyse the results of the exercise, identify gaps and support improvements in the international co-ordinated response during nuclear and radiological emergencies.
The ConvEx-3 exercises are run every few years, with the last edition held in 2021.
