Goals from Anis Mehmeti (3), Ivan Azon (41) and George Hirst (74) saw the Blues cruise to victory back on Suffolk soil.

Asked for his assessment, Matos said: “It’s easy, Ipswich were better and deserved the win – that’s the assessment.

“Ipswich scored early. After that we needed to chase the result. Ipswich started with good intensity and we could not match that.

“I think we were better second half, more organised. We had better timings, were better with the ball, but didn’t find a way. After that, they get the third goal. And I think that’s the story of the game.”

He continued: “Ipswich is a really good team, have a brilliant squad, are really well organised. We knew that to compete against them you need to be 100%. Small things and small details make the difference in these kind of games.

“Ipswich scoring really early changed the way we needed to chase back. When you chase back these kind of games from the start you always imbalance yourself a little bit.

“It was a hard game for us, but we need to find a way to be much more competitive and that’s the truth.

“I’m still not that long at the job. We will keep trying to improve and we need to improve. It takes time.

“The most important thing is to build the foundations, build the right mentality and build the right values.”
