Britney Spears was arrested in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence, law enforcement sources confirmed to ABC News.

Spears was arrested just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Office records. She was cited and released early Thursday morning.

The arresting agency was the California Highway Patrol, records state. While the CHP is not giving details on the traffic stop, sources confirmed the arrest was for suspected DUI.

This isn’t the first time Spears had legal issues. In 2007, she was involved in a misdemeanor hit-and-run, and driving without a valid license.

Eyewitness News has reached out to the CHP for more information.

A representative for Spears issued the following statement: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

The statement noted that Spears’ sons Sean Preston Federline and Jayden James Federline, whom she shares with ex Kevin Federline, “are going to be spending time with her.”

“Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being,” the statement added.
