Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer was aghast at the decision to send Jacob Ramsey off against Manchester United. The legendary No.9 declared it a ‘nonsense’ that the midfielder received a second yellow card for diving during the Magpies’ Premier League win.

While Will Osula’s late goal sent St James’ Park into raptures, referee Peter Bankes had sent the stadium into fury in the opening half. After picking up a yellow card for fouling Casemiro, Ramsey was then judged to have dived by the official after falling to the ground, having pushed the ball past goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

It was a decision generally considered as harsh, and Shear was incredulous that Ramsey had been given his marching orders. Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer expressed his frustration.

He said: “The one at Newcastle, where he gave him another yellow card for diving. For that referee to be in that mindset to think ‘he is actually conning me, you’re a big cheat, you’ve made a massive dive and I’m going to show you another card’….

“For that referee to actually think ‘he’s gone through, he’s tried to con me massively and he’s dived’… He [Ramsey] didn’t even look up.

“He didn’t want a penalty, he didn’t appeal or anything. It was a nonsense decision.”

Speaking with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, Shearer was full of praise for Eddie Howe. The former forward believes the Newcastle boss made good decisions to bring Aaron Ramsdale into the side, and to not select Nick Woltemade.

Shearer also had particular praise for Joelinton’s performance in midfield.

“I thought Newcastle were the better team with 11 men and 10 men,” he explained. “I wasn’t disappointed with Man United but I thought they were really poor.

Eddie Howe was praised

“Newcastle, with the form they’ve been in, I was a bit edgy because Man United have been winning games, and without doubt they’ve changed under Michael Carrick.

“But I thought Newcastle dominated last night. A Couple of really big decisions from Eddie Howe, he got them right.

“Playing Ramsdale, whatever happened with Woltemade, whether he was poorly or not, that made a change. I thought Joelinton in midfield was immense. He was brilliant.”
